Meditation Made Easy

Fun fact: A lot of very successful people meditate. Another fun fact: You don’t have to be a spiritual guru to meditate. All you have to do is make it a point to take deep breaths, focus your attention, practice mindfulness, and tada – you’ve just meditated! Yes, it can be THAT easy.

The benefits of meditation are so great, that it would take a 5 page blog post to list them all. So for the sake of time, check out the picture below from The Art of Living.

All meditation techniques have three basic things in common. Instead of thinking that you must sit cross-legged, that you must close your eyes, and chanting Ohm, why not take the basics of meditation and apply them to your everyday life?

Breath

A major part of the many different meditation techniques out there is to take deep breaths. Simple as that.

That means that if you want to meditate, you can meditate anytime you take a deep breath—are you stuck in traffic? No problem, take a deep breath. Are you walking your dogs? Breathe deeply. Are you eating lunch at work? Breathe deeply.

Every breath you take is an opportunity to meditate on the spot.

Focused attention

Focusing your attention on a mantra is a part of several meditation techniques. A few mantra examples are “I am present, “I will release things out of my control“, or just a simple word like “love“. Just like with deep breathing, throughout your day create an opportunity to focus your attention away from the stress in your life and focus on something that is beneficial instead. 

Focus on the breath or a mantra. The point is to be in the present moment.

Time

Yes, you can / should eventually work your way to sitting cross-legged with your eyes closed for five minutes daily.  But don’t feel bad if you are busy and feel like you don’t have time to sit down for five minutes. Take it one day at a time and start with small increments.

Take some time this week to breathe deeply, focus on a mantra, and be in the present moment. If you make this a daily habit, you will start seeing changes in a matter of days.
